FAT and NTFS File System

Every computer user must be familiar with the terms FAT and NTFS usually when he/she perform format hard drive or install window in pc. I want to share more information about it. There are essentially three different file system available.

1)FAT16 :- The full form of FAT is File Allocation Table. The FAT16 file system was introduced way back with MS-DOS in 1981 and it is showing its age. Firstly, it was designed to handle files on a floppy drive but later on with minor modification used to handle hard disks and even file names longer than the original limitation of 8.3 characters but it is still the lowest advantage of denominator. The biggest advantage of FAT16 is that it is compatible accross a wide variety of Operating System including Windows 95/98/ME, OS/2, Linux etc. The biggest problem of FAT16 is that if has a fixed maximum number of cluster per partition, So as hard disks get bigger and bigger, the size of each cluster has to get larger. In a 2GB partition, each cluster is 12KB meaning that even the smallest file on the partition will take up 32KB of space. FAT16 also doesn't support compression, encryption and advanced security using access control list.

2)FAT32 :- The FAT32 file system originally introduced in Window 95, service pack2 is really just an extension of the original FAT16 file system that provides for a much larger number of clusters per partition. As such, it greatly improves the overall disks utilization when compared to FAT16 file system. However, FAT32 shares all of the other limitations of FAT16 and adds an important additional limitations. Now this is not a problem if you are running FAT32 on a Window XP computers and sharing your drive out to other computers on your network.

3)NTFS :- The full form of NTFS is New Technology File System. The NTFS file system introduced with first version of Window NT is a completely different file system from FAT. It provides for greatly increased security file-by-file compression quotas and even encryption. It is the default file system for new installations of Window XP. You can convert FAT16 or FAT32 volumes to NTFS at any point. The NTFS file system is generally not compatible with other Operating System installed on the same computer. This partition provided a place to store emergency recovery tools or special drivers needed for reinstallation.

  • Dont Forget To LogOut : Dont forget to logout after you have been finished your browsing on fb. The habbit of logout avoid the risk of LikeJacking. LikeJacking is a melicious technique of tricking users of a website into posting a facebook status update for a site, they didnt intentionally mean to 'Like'.
