Create Advanced Custom - Google Maps Engine Lite

For years Google Maps had the option for creating custom placemarks and basic shapes in the "my maps" option in your account. But if you want to further customize your maps you really had to do thatwork in Google Earth. Yesterday, Google introduced Maps Engine Lite which bridges the gap between creating basic custom maps in Google Maps and creating custom layers in Google Earth.
Maps Engine Lite allows you to go beyond manually adding placemarks to your Google Maps by uploading a spreadsheet of locations that will be displayed on your map.
You can import up to three spreadsheets per map. You can also draw custom lines and shapes on your maps. Like any other Google Map you can invite others to collaborate with you. You can share your map by embeddingit into a website.

Google Earth Outreach offers a detailed tutorial on how to use the newMaps Engine Lite. I'm looking forward to going through the tutorial and creating some newmaps this weekend.

Applications for Education
Maps Engine Lite could be a great tool to use to introduce students to using GIS to interpret data and make decisions based on that data. Here's one way that I might use Maps Engine Lite with students in my area.

I could create data sets about ice thickness on a set of area ponds, create a data set about average weekly high temperatures in those areas, import that data into the map and ask students to make predictions as to when the ponds will be ice-free.

Internet connectivity in India

A decade ago Internet connectivity may have been considered a luxury, but the world's outlook on what I like to describe as the repository of collective human consciousness has changed radically. It's been several years since France has made access to Internet a human right. Finland has gone a step further and mandated access to a minimum of 1Mbps Internet connection a legal right to its population of five million. The minimum required bandwidth is proposed tobe bumped up to 100Mbps by 2015.
This makes one wonder how long will it take for India to implement the same for its 1.2 billion-odd population. Not anytime soon because roughly some 600 million Indians do not have access to electricity, let alone Internet access. Almost all of this underprivileged populace, however, resides in far-flung villages and towns. The metros and tier-2 towns,on the other hand, have a considerably better Internet penetration, andthis is where most of our estimated 121 million strong Internet users are based out of.
Procuring Internet connectivity even in metros isn't anywhere near as convenient or a pleasant experience as itshould rightfully be. Evenas the home Internet revolution was gaining momentum at the turn of the millennium, reliable connectivity to the WorldWide Web was an expensive proposition fraught with many risks. Thanks to a lack of consumer protection and guidelines for ISPs, manyearly adopters have losttens and thousands of rupees to fly-by-night ISP that insisted—like anyself-respecting conman would—on full annual payment in advance.
The condition after a decade is considerably better with large corporate entities havingestablished their presence as reliable ISPs. The only complaintsnow are relegated to those who have Internet connections limited by data or time. In such cases, sporadic instances of users being charged exorbitantly andsometimes fraudulently with inflated usage figures, complaints of packet duplication, and general sentiment of mistrust between the consumer and service provider are common. Mind you, these complaints aren't exactly in the minority, which isn't a surprise, because we aren't really known for our strong corporate ethics, as aptly illustrated by the Sify debacle.

The picture isn't rosy even for the instances where transparency exists, because the overall cost of Internet connectivity in India is pretty high to begin with. Considering the might of IT in this nation and a rather impressive consumer base, it's confounding how the costper Mb is still relatively expensive, when compared to its First World peers that possess just a fraction of its connected users. Such tabs on bandwidth consumption are pitiful in an age where video services are considered the cornerstone of the Internet revolution.
While the rest of the world is moving towards multi-gigabit home connections to fuel the craze of streaming content, Indian ISPs on the other hand have come down like an anvil to curb this sort of data consumption. If you haven't clued in on it yet,by that I mean everyone's favourite bugbear—FUP, or Fair Usage Policy. For the twopeople who've never heard of this, it's essentially a marketing euphemism to describe the ISP setting an arbitrary usage limit for its tariff plan, and the actof dropping the connection speed when users hit that limit. That not only limits the subscriber's usage of the Internet, but it's a rather insidious precedent that's detrimental to Internet penetration in the country as a whole.
This isn't the only problem the consumers have been plagued with. Absence of guidelines to ensure quality of service and lax consumer protection laws have led to a wide chasm between the consumer's expectations and the kind of service deliveredby the ISP. Downtimes tend to be quite frequent, but there's no clear directive for ISPs to maintain a minimum uptimeand if the consumer is liable to receive a refund if the same isn't upheld. This is largely because ifyou ignore a few large players such as MTNL/BSNL and Reliance, most of the home Internetdelivery mechanism depends upon local cableoperators for the last mile. The massive inconsistency in service and the general lackadaisical attitude of these cable operators is to blame for poor reliability and quality of Internet connectivity.
In a country with 87 million mobile Internet users, the service offered is nowhere near what it should ideally be. The ISPs reluctance to deliver reasonable amount of bandwidth has led to incredibly high contention ratios for mobile Internet connections. This means most 3G connections at busy areas tend to havethe bandwidth shared by way too many people. This is precisely why it's very rarely that users have the luxury of enjoying the full bandwidth of their 3G connections.

use of potential mood in sentence

The potential mood has several suffixes depending on the pronoun :

I : - ऊँ
We : - एँ
You : - एँ
He : - ए
She : - ए
They : - एँ

An example :
She may work – वह काम करे

The potential mood is formed a lot like the future tense, except that the ending गा , गी , and गे is omitted. So instead of करूंगा it will be करूँ .

The negative can also be used in the potential mood :
You may not cry – आप मत रोएँ

The potential mood can be turned into the interrogative mood by adding क्या to the beginning of the sentence :
May I go? – क्या मैं जाऊँ ?

But using “can” is a bit different from the potential mood :
They can fall – वे गिर सकते हैं
They may fall (potential mood) – वे गिरें..

use of also or too

The particle भी means “also” or “too”.

Rāmu also went – रामू भी गया
रामू = Rāmu. भी = also. गया = went.

भी can also be used after a pronoun
I came too - मैं भी आया
मैं = I. भी = too. आया = came.

Here are other pronouns that you can substitute with “I… too”
We also – हम भी

You as well – आप भी

He/She as well – वह भी

They too – वे भी

भी can be added with other words to form new words:

भी with indefinite pronoun कोई (any) will become “anyone”

Nobody – कोई भी नहीं

Anything – कुछ भी

The word जब (when) with भी will be जभी or “whenever”
The word तब (then) with भी will be तभी or “even then”
Whatever – जितना भी

Whoever /whichever – जो भी..

comparison in english to hindi

For today’s lesson, we will explore ways to make a comparison between people.
Let’s start off with a comparative sentence:

He is older than you : वह आप से बड़ा है
वह = He. आप = you. से = than. बड़ा = tall. है = is.

The से postposition is what makes this sentence a comparative sentence.
You can also use the adverb अधिक , which means “more”, to show a comparison.

That book is better (more good) than this one : वह पुस्तक इस पुस्तक से अधिक अच्छी है
वह = that. पुस्तक = book. इस = this. पुस्तक = book. से = than. अधिक = more. अच्छी = good. है = is.
There’s also the option of using के मुकाबले में as a way to compare things.
के मुकाबले में literally means “in comparison with”

This girl is wiser than that girl or This girl is wiser in comparison with that girl :
उस लड़की के मुकाबले में यह लड़की बुद्धिमान है
उस = that. लड़की = girl. के मुकाबले में = in comparison with. यह = this. लड़की = girl. बुद्धिमान = wise. है = is.

Now let’s look at a sentence that expresses the superlative:
Sunil is the wisest of all in his class : सुनील कक्षा में सब से अधिक बुद्धिमान है .
सुनील = Sunil. कक्षा = class. में = in. सब से अधिक = most. बुद्धिमान = wise. है = is.

So you see here that सब से अधिक acts as the superlative.

use locative case in english to hindi

The locative case marks the position or location of objects :

Here are some sample sentences :

She sat on the horse : वह घोड़े पर बैठी

The paper is on the table: कागज़ मेज़ पर है

My clothes are on the roof : मेरे कपड़े छत पर हैं

The common word in all these sentences is पर.
In all these sentences, पर indicates that the object will be in the locative case.
For example, in the sentence, “The paper is on the table”, “table” ( मेज़ ) is in the locative case. Similarly, “horse” ( घोड़े ) in the sentence “She sat on the horse” is in the locative and “roof”( छत ) in “My clothes are on the roof” is also in the locative. Notice that in these three sentences, the word “on” in English was translated as पर in Hindi. However, sometimes, the use of पर doesn’t sound quite right if you use the English “of”.

Here are some examples:
I eat at the table : मैं मेज पर खाना खाता हूँ

His office is some distance from here : उसका दफ़्तर यहाँ से कुछ दुरी पर है

In general, the sentence would make more sense to say, “I eat at the table” rather than “I eat on the table”. It’s also possible to say, “His office is some distance on from here”, but most English speakers would probably just omit the “on”. In a lot of cases, “on” in English does correspond to पर , so it’s not something to worry too much about.

Now take a look at these sentences:
My son studies in college: मेरा बेटा कालेज में पढ़ता है

I sat in the car : मैं गाड़ी में बैठा

My office is in Delhi : मेरा दफ़्तर दिल्ली में है

The common word in all these sentences is में. If you guessed that the word “in” in English correlates to में, then you’re right! में is the post position that indicates that “college” ( कालेज ), car ( गाड़ी ), and Delhi ( दिल्ली ) will be in the locative...

active and passive voice

The instrumental case can also be used to convert a speech from an active voice to a passive voice. In the active voice, the subject performs the verb. In the passive voice the verb is performed on the object by or through the subject. The subject acts as a king of instrument.

Here are some examples:

You drink tea: आप चाय पीते हैं (active)

Tea is drunk by you: चाय आपसे पी जाती है (passive)

She reads a book: वह किताब पढ़ती है (active)

The gets read by her: किताब उसके द्वारा पढ़ी जाती है (passive)

He wrote the letter: उसने खत लिखा (active)

The letter was written by him: खत उससे लिखागया (passive)

I ate a mango: मैंने आम खाया (active)
A mango was eaten by me: आम मुझसे खाया गया था (passive)

You drink: आप पीते हैं (active)

It is drunk by you: आपकेद्वारा पीया जाता है (passive)

Raam killed Raavana: राम ने रावण को मारा (active)

Raavana was killed by Raam: रावण रामके द्वारा मारा गया था (passive)

Here’s a mini quiz:
which is passive? active?
1.उससे आईना टूट गया (The mirror was broken by her)
2.उसने उमा से कहा कि … (He told Uma that…)

use dative case in english to hindi

When an object is transferred to someone or for someone, the receiver of the object will be in the dative case.
Here are some examples:

I gave him the ball : मैंने उसको गेंद दी

You brought food for me: आप मेरे लिए खाना लाए

We gave them a letter (we gave a letter to them) : हमने उसको पत्र दिया

They cooked food for us: उन्होंने हमारे लिए खाना बनाया

In the sentences above, को = to. के लिए = for.

To be more exact, the dative of a sentence like this ”I give money to the woman” is ”to the woman”.

The dative also has a contracted form as well.
For example, “to me” is मुझको but a contracted form of this is मुझे
“to us” is हमको and the contracted form is हमें
“to you” familar तुमको , contracted form = तुम्हें
“to you” polite आपको no contracted form of आपको
”to him, her” उसको , contracted form = उसे
“to them” उनको , contracted form = उन्हें

Here’s an example of a sentence using a contracted form:

We gave money to him : हमने उसे पैसे दिए...
